When I was pregnant with Amanda I worked with a woman who was the mother of nine children. I remember asking her if she had a good Mother's Day and she responded that it was a good one since she didn't receive any "household" gifts. For her these gifts included anything that may benefit her entire family in any way, including anything for use in the kitchen. Her husband and children were forbidden from ever buying her anything to do with cooking. Not for Christmas. Not for her birthday. Not for Mother's Day. She didn't like the kitchen and for her anything having to do with cooking was a chore, therefore no kitchen gifts were allowed. She wanted jewelry, flowers, candy, a pedicure and other gifts just for her. I had always been a lover of all-things-kitchen and wondered if motherhood would somehow turn this love into a chore. I sure hoped that it wouldn't.
Six kids later and it hasn't. I love being in the kitchen and creating food for me and my family. I love receiving fun kitchen gifts. Appliances, cookbooks, kitchen tools and gadgets. I think those are all fantastic gifts.
For Mother's Day on Sunday Erik and the kids got me a
panini press and three cookbooks. Oh yeah! They know me so well.
Thanks family!

How fun! I remember Klint's mom telling me the same thing -- being offended with a "household" gift, and I wondered if I'd feel the same way. I don't either! I guess I'm a little practical. (Though I did go choose my own mother's day gift this year -- a new church outfit. . . so who am I to talk?!) Fun new toy! Dinner looked good!
If only I had more kitchen storage for big, new, fun appliances... alas, my cupboards are not exponentiating...
I just ADORE paninis. Lucky you. They look yummy. I agree with you about kitchen stuff. I enjoy receiving appliances and kitchen stuff as gifts, but I'm running out of space. I need a bigger kitchen, I think. Have fun with your new stuff.
I'm a kitchen and household gadget gal myself! I love to get stuff like that. You enjoy cooking so much that it makes sense that you would like a Paninis Press....besides, it's not really "practical" because we all don't "need" paninis...right???? :)
That panini press looks like so much fun! In one of my last blogs I commented on the same phenomenon of getting "practical" items for gifts. I didn't use to enjoy getting those gifts, but I am getting back into enjoying cooking and baking again, so they are now "luxury" items...
Sorry, that last comment was from me, not my husband ;-)
