A Little Break

We didn't have any big plans for spring break last month, but tried to find a few local activities to enjoy as a family. There really is so much to do right here in the DFW area that we don't take advantage of often enough. Sometimes a good "stay-cation" is a good way to enjoy some fun family time. Here's a little rundown of our week:

1) Fort Worth Stockyards. We spent the first Saturday of the break as a family enjoying some good ol' Texas fun in Fort Worth. There was a live cattle auction going on as well as the daily longhorn cattle drive down main street. It's good to get in touch with our inner-cowboy every now and then.
The annual St. Patrick's Day Cowboy Parade was something worth seeing at least once if you live in the area. Here's my favorite parade entry:We stopped by an old-fashioned candy shop on the walk back to the car (where I so generously let everyone pick two pieces) and then enjoyed a great dinner at Pappas Burgers.

2) Roller Skating. One of my favorite little outings was taking Shawn and Jacob to the Roller Rink with some friends. I love that they have these little rolling walkers to help kids learn to skate. It took Shawn a few tries to get the hang of it, but he was cruising around the rink before too long. We definitely need to head back for some more skating this summer.

3) Dollar Movie. I love 50 cent Tuesday at the Dollar Theater. It was fun spending time there with my boys and a friend and her boys. I especially love that the movie tickets only cost $3 for six of us since I don't think I could have paid any more to sit through singing chipmunks for 90 minutes.

4) Dallas Heritage Park. Erik was able to take one day off at the end of the week so that we could enjoy another fun family day. The idea of heading to Dallas Heritage Park was met with mixed reviews from the kids, but in the end I think they all had a great time.
We enjoyed some great photo opps and some extrememly beautiful weather.
It was also quite an educational day for the boys. Ryan learned that you can't be much taller than 5'3" to fit comfortably through an old-fashioned doorway, Shawn learned to jump rope, and Jacob learned that indoor plumbing is awesome. We ended the day with a great dinner at Babe's Chicken.

5) Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I don't know when the last time is that I saw a movie on opening weekend, but this was definitely one that was looked forward to at our house. Erik took four of the kids Saturday afternoon and I took Ryan that evening. Laughed. My. Head. Off.... especially seeing the movie with Ryan. He's the best movie laugher ever. If you don't know these books, you should.

Maybe it's because I had to have a first year of middle school/junior high twice (lucky me... we moved between 6th and 7th grade) but I find Wimpy Kid hilarious, in a very dumb and immature way. We all need that sometimes. I think the movie characters were cast just perfectly. Great way to end the week.
Can't wait to see what local adventures we can come up with this summer!

What a fun spring break! I so miss the cheap movies. The cheapest here is 4 dollars and it is so far away. Otherwise, it is 12 to 15 a person. So, 90 dollars for my family to go to the movies. Not happening. I love the roller skating helpers. That is awesome!

Staycations can often be more relaxing - and just as fun - than real ones. Way to make it a great one!

What a fun spring break!!! Where were skating walkers when I was young...in fact, where are they now? I'd never heard of them until this post and I think it's the best idea ever! Such a cute family you have! We don't get to see you near enough!!! Miss you guys!
