Good Reads

It seems like I completely struck out on a few of my book picks for 2009 (I do not recommend Barbara Kingsolver's Prodigal Summer or The Used World by Haven Kimmel). So, I'm reaching out to you, my dear readers... What fantastic books have you read lately? Next week is the annual planning party for my book club and I'd love to come armed with a nice list of good reads for 2010.

I can very enthusiastically recommend "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett and "An American Childhood" by Annie Dillard. I read both with highlighter in hand, and felt changed, uplifted and instructed by both. They're both worth owning in hardback, and you'll come back again and again.

Happy December!

I'm sure you've heard, and it will come as no surprise that my recommendation is "The Elegance of the Hedgehog" by Muriel Barbery. It was my favorite book that I read this year. I'm anxious to read it again.

You already chose my latest favorite--the potato peel society book. Have you done "Peace Like a River" (Leif Enger) or "At Home in Mitford" (Jan Karon)? I also like Bill Bryson's travel books. So very funny. "Cold Sassy Tree" by Olive Ann Burns, "Alas, Babylon" by Pat Frank, "The Spy Wore Red" by Aline, Countess of Romanones, "My Life in France" by Julia Child...I will stop now. Even though I could go on and on...:-)

I loved "The Help" it's one of my favorites ever. "The Glass Castle" and "Half Broke Horses" both by Jeannette Walls are great books. I recently read "Shadow Baby" and really liked the story as well as the writing. Good luck. I was excited to hear the other commenter's suggestions.

Betsy, I've already bought "The Elegance of the Hedgehog" and am excited to read it.

Jodi, we've read both "Peace Like a River" and "Cold Sassy Tree." Great books! I'd love to read the others... I happen to know that I'm getting "My Life in France" as a Christmas present from my mom. : )

Keep the ideas coming!

Mom! You shouldn't be declaring what presents you're getting for people publicly on the internet! (:

Anyway, you guys should read Pride and Prejudice, if I could be there for the discussion. That would be fun. I'm just kidding. As long as I get a treat I'm good.

I recently read "The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie" and LOVED it! Also, Louise Penny is a fantastic mystery writer. I read all 5 of her books over the past couple months. Still Life is the first.... It took me two tries getting into the characters, which are quite characters, but once I got to know them, the stories are so much fun and well developed. I am excited to read a couple of the suggestions here. (I loved The Glass Castle....)
