A Good Cry

I LOVE good literature!  I love books that make me think, not only while I'm reading, but for days after I'm done.  I love books with substance and meaning.  I love books that make me cry.

Last night at book club we discussed Cry, The Beloved Country by Alan Paton.  I was really excited to read this book, having heard wonderful things about it, but I was a little hesitant to suggest this book for book club, wondering if I would enjoy it more because I've had the opportunity to visit South Africa. I don't think anyone who read the book was disappointed.

The plot is a powerfully moving and emotional journey of a black South African preacher as he searches for his sister and wayward son.  It is beautifully written and shows that despite so much hate and violence in the world, there are many good people who are willing to offer friendship and forgiveness, even in the most difficult situations.  It's been a long time since I've read something so powerful.  Five Stars for Alan Paton and his Beloved Country.

For those who were at book club last night, here's the dessert recipe for my "Black and White" Sundaes:

Cake
1 box chocolate fudge cake mix
1 large box of instant chocolate pudding
eggs, oil, water according to package directions
Mix ingredients and bake in 9x13 pan for 30 - 35 minutes, until done.

Kathy's Hot Fudge Sauce
Bring to boil:
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. butter
1/3 c. cocoa powder
1/4 c. water
pinch of salt
Boil softly for one minute. Remove from heat and stir in:
1 T. vanilla

Serve cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, hot fudge and whipped cream.

This book sounds great. I'll have to add it to my "to read" list. I like books that make me think for days as well. And your recipe sounds awesome. My mom has a great hot fudge recipe. Maybe we'll make some for FHE tomorrow. Thanks for sharing.
