Weekend In NY

For weeks I had looked forward to a little weekend getaway with Erik to New York City. Despite living only 6 hours from the Big Apple for several of my teenage years, I'd never been. Crazy, I know. I guess my parents didn't deem the big city as vacation-worthy for a family of nine. I don't blame them. That's why only Erik and I went.

We decided that a trip was in order to celebrate Erik's birthday and the 20 years (yes, twenty!) since we first met. It was all fabulous even though I felt a tad bit guilty for leaving behind a couple of sick kids. Our babysitter assured us that she could handle it, which she did fabulously. Everyone survived and there was even a plate of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies on the table waiting upon our return.

Good thing I brought along a cute new pair of comfortable walking shoes. I can't believe how much we walked in three days. We covered miles on foot, seeing everything we could... the Empire State Building, Flatiron Building, Rockefeller Center, Times Square, Wall Street, Battery Park, Bryant Park, Central Park, Chelsea Market, Grand Central Station, the New York Public Library, and more! It is truly an amazing city, unlike anywhere I've ever visited before. I loved riding the subway (really!), seeing all the street vendors (especially the ones getting busted by undercover cops), and observing all the millions of people that are in the city. I was fascinated by it all.

Of course all the walking needed to be fueled by a lot of good energy building food, and our hosts definitely knew the right places to take us. We enjoyed burgers and sloppy joes at Schnippers, some great NY style pizza at John's, cupcakes at Crumbs, breakfast at Amy's Bread at Chelsea Market, a quick lunch at Taco Taco, and a fantastic dinner at Max Brenner's Chocolate Factory. You know a place is going to be good when the all chocolate dessert menu is pages long. Any future trips to New York will definitely include a visit to Max. Trust me. It is worth the two hour wait. Kelsey finished off the weekend with a great Sunday dinner of cheesesteak sandwiches.

It was so much fun getting away with Erik and spending time with Robby and Kelsey. We loved staying at their darling apartment on the Upper East Side. They were such great hosts and they truly love living in New York. I think I'm too much of a country girl to ever feel comfortable living there... but I would love another visit sometime.

For anyone dying to see more pictures, you can click here. We are such tourists!

Hooray for a grown-up trip! I know you adore your kids but, seriously, is there any luxury like a couple days without them? And what a perfect place to go in the fall! I love New York. My family lived there when the kids were small, and I have great memories. Luke & I haven't been to NYC in a few years; maybe it's time to schedule a trip.

What a fun trip! I love NY, to visit, too. In fact, I am hoping to go this summer. Thank you for the great restaurant suggestions. If you go again, you have to hit Carnagie Deli. It is a long wait and world reknown, too, but the food is so good.

What a blast! I'm dying to go to NYC. I keep telling Graham to get a client there so we have an excuse. I loved looking at all your pictures, it looks like you made the most of your trip! You look fantastic, and I've said it before, but I'd never guess the two of you had 6 kiddos at home!

I loved looking at all of your pictures! It made me "homesick" for the city. (Even though I've never lived there- in my dream life I have!) I have to agree with everyone- you do look fabulous!

That looks like a wonderful trip. You and Erik look like such a happy, radiant couple. I'll have to keep your itinerary in mind for future reference when we plan a trip to NYC. I would love to go back. It's been so long!

It was fun to see Kelsey in your photos, as opposed to watching her on Food Network related tv and internet!

I looked through your complete album, too! What a fun weekend getaway!
