Here's the second installment in my weekly "Getting to Know Me" posts. (Thanks to Amy for inspiring my post this week!)
Dreams are so bizarre. It's always so weird to me how normal life situations are infused with very strange, surreal surroundings. I'm not one who believes that all (or even most) dreams have deep meaning - or really any meaning at all. But I do think that things that happened in our past have ways of sneaking into our nightly subconscious. For me, two recurring dream themes are definitely related to past experiences. Here we go...
Dream #1 - Back to School
I don't have this dream as much as I used to. The situation varies, but I often find myself back in school - usually college. I'm always very unprepared and often dream of showing up for a final and find nobody is in the room.
Yes, this is based on a true story - I actually missed two finals in college. Once I was babysitting and didn't get back for my Tennis final in time. The other I had looked at the schedule wrong and showed up on the wrong date. Unfortunately it was a day late, not a day early. Bummer. I also have dreams where I find out at the end of the semester that I was registered for a class that I didn't know I had and I try to get all of the work done in a day. I always wake up panicked. Although this never really happened I was a bit of a procrastinator in school and it's now coming back to haunt me.
Dream #2 - The Champion Skater
There are times I dream that I am a great roller skater; spins, jumps, one leg out - the works. I recently had a dream that I was outside in front of our house showing off my skating skills for some neighbors and my kids were so embarrassed. I was on some sweet white roller skates and I was totally uninhibited. Embarrassing, I know.
I'm sure this dream is based on how much I wanted to be a good roller skater as a kid. I could hardly go once around the rink without falling, but I wished I could do all of the fancy tricks that I saw some of the cool older kids do. (This was the early 80's - it was cool back then!) One friend gave me a pair of her old roller skates so that I wouldn't have to rent the ugly brown ones when we went. She was a great skater and I think I really believed in my ten-year-old heart that wearing those beautiful white skates would improve my skills. Unfortunately this wasn't the case. I learned that there was no such thing as magic skates and my uncoordinated legs never did catch on. I'll just keep on dreamin'!

Oh I love your skating dream! I have a similiar college one where I realize I have a final and I haven't gone to class all semester. Horrible. Do you ever dream of the JKHB? I am sometimes lost and trying to remember the secret of the 1000s and the 1100s.
Oh, yes, the JKHB has popped into a few dreams over the years, as confusing as ever. I think I read recently that the College of Humanities has moved to another building so it's now just called the JKB...?
I have the "it's the day of the final and I had no idea I was registered for the class" dream all the time...it's always a history class for some reason. I have such vivid dreams that sometimes I wake up more tired than when I went to bed. Crazy!
I, too have the recurring school dreams, but, sadly, I'm still in High School! I almost always am trying to remember my locker combo so that I can get my book out to cram for a test as I walk to the class to take it. STRESS!!
Fun Post, Julie! I say we whip out the skates this Summer! :0 YIKES!!
Emily, Mom... please. No roller skates.
Julie, these are great! Hilarious! I have the dumb school dreams too, but mine are mostly high school, like Emily said. And usually I'm trying to explain to my friends that I'm married and have three kids but just had to come back to finish up a semester or something wierd that like- so my life still mixes in. Strange.
That skating dream really had me laughing. Now I know what you need for your birthday next year. . . I'll start saving up now. :)
I love this series you are doing! It's so funny for me to read that you don't believe in meanings behind dreams because I was raised with a Mom who believed and still believes that dreams mean EVERYTHING! Constantly analyzing...so, if you are ever curious what your dreams could be saying about you...I'll give you Vicki's number! :)
What a fun idea to blog about. Those college finals dreams must be universal. I have those often too or the one where you forget to go to the class the whole semester. So strange.
